Biography

Andreas is a sea-going physical oceanographer focusing on ocean processes, especially in the context of dispersal and transport of heat, larvae, tracers, pollutants, etc. A long standing research interest concerns the role of topography in controlling the upwelling and water-mass transformation required to close the global overturning circulation. Andreas is also active in the development of ocean instrumentation and methods, including pioneering the routine measurement of vertical velocity in the ocean, introducing a new finestructure parameterization methods for turbulence and mixing, as well as developing instrumentation for collecting velocity data at high latitudes close to the magnetic poles.
