Best known for research that conclusively demonstrated the oceanic origin of Sahel drought, Giannini's interests span the dynamics of tropical climate (drought and recovery in the Sahel; seasonal prediction; monsoons and climate change; El Niño as a warming analogue); climatic impact (on the environment and on food security); and scientific communication (teaching climate change as an interdisciplinary endeavor; the role of scientific knowledge in policy and practice).
