Undergraduate Degree Program
Undergraduates may pursue a Bachelor of Arts Degree in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences through Columbia College or Columbia's School of General Studies. Majors and concentrations are offered in the fields of Earth Science and Environmental Science. Columbia College offers a traditional four-year, full-time program that would be the normal track for people just finishing high school. The School of General Studies offers programs for returning or nontraditional students.
Earth and Environmental Science Journalism Master's Program
The goal of this program is to produce graduates with a rare blend of scientific knowledge and journalistic skills. Our graduates are able to inform the public about discoveries, insights and ideas concerning the Earth and Environment, in a manner that is simultaneously interesting and accurate.
Climate and Society Master's Program
A new twelve-month M.A. program in Climate and Society has an anticipated start date of September 2004. It will train professionals and academics to understand and to cope with the impacts of climate variability and climate change on society and the environment. This rigorous program enphasizes the problems of developing societies. Applications are due March 15, 2004. Financial aid is available.
Ph.D. Program in Earth and Environmental Science
The Ph.D. program prepares you for a career as a scientist, someone who can make fundamental discoveries and solve important, outstanding problems. We offer a very broad range of specialties, including aqueous geochemistry, atmospheric science, climate science, ecophysiology, geology, marine geology and geophysics, paleoclimate, paleontology, physical oceanography, seismology and solid earth geophysics, and solid earth geochemistry. Our students learn both to make fundamental contributions to their own specialty and to broadly understand how the earth and its environment work.
