In 2009 the department launched the Noon Balloon, a weekly lunchtime seminar series featuring department faculty, graduate students, and members of the affiliated research community discussing their research and current events in the earth and environmental sciences. The lecture series provided undergraduates in the Earth and environmental sciences, and anyone else who was interested, a look at the breadth of research being conducted in these fields. Lecturers were research scientists, faculty and graduate students who spoke about their current research and how it ultimately contributes to the understanding of our planet.

Unfortunately the weekly Noon Balloon has been suspended since 2011, but plans to revive it are in the works.
