Research in Solid Earth Geochemistry

Terry A. Plank Steven L. Goldstein Peter B. Kelemen Marc W. Spiegelman David Walker

The Solid Earth Geochemistry group studies processes and products of large-scale Earth differentiation, such as the composition, evolution and age of the deep mantle and core, partial melting of the mantle and the formation of oceanic crust, integration of chemistry with mantle flow dynamics, arc magmatism, and the behavior of materials at high pressures. The group has also made distinguished contributions in the area of continental growth and differentiation. Several Officers of Research at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory are also members of this group, and a strong affiliation with the Earth and Planetary Sciences Department at the American Museum of Natural History extends the intellectual and analytical scope of the group. The group has a strong analytical and experimental orientation, with high quality facilities for isotope mass spectrometry, high-pressure experimental systems, major and trace element analysis, etc.
