The Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences is pleased to announce the NOON BALLOON lecture series. This weekly lecture series will provide undergraduates in the Earth and environmental sciences, and anyone else who is interested, a look at the breadth of research being conducted in these fields. Lecturers will be research scientists/faculty and graduate students who will talk about their current research and how their research ultimately contributes to the understanding of our planet.

Göran EkströmProfessor Göran Ekström's talk, "Detecting Landslides with Seismology," kicked off the series in style.  Dr. Ekström is a Professor in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences and Research Scientist at Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory. His main research interest is global earthquake seismology. This includes the detailed study of individual earthquake ruptures, and the relationship between seismicity and the large scale tectonic deformation of the crust and mantle over geologic time. Prof. Ekström's teaching interests include Environmental Geology, in particular the science and policy aspects of the assessment and mitigation of Geologic Hazards.

Future talks are scheduled for Tuesdays from 12:15-1:00pm in Room 417 Schermerhorn Hall.  Attendees are welcome to bring their lunch.

All are welcome to attend!
