Congratulations to DEES Professor Arnold L. Gordon, who has been named a Fellow of the American
Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). He was honored by the section on Atmospheric and Hydrospheric Science for his pioneering and novel contributions to understanding ocean circulation, the role of the ocean in climate variability, and leadership in international collaboration in ocean sciences.
Also named as an AAAS Fellow is Walter Clarkson Pitman III of Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, who holds a Special Lecturer appointment in DEES. He was recognized by the section on Geology & Geography for his pivotal role in the development and acceptance of the theory of plate tectonics.

journal, Science (www.sciencemag.org). Election as an AAAS Fellow is an honor bestowed upon AAAS members by their peers for their scientifically or socially distinguished efforts to advance science or its applications.
