Research Interests: Earth systems.
I've studied
and worked in the applied sciences for thirty years. It has been
a fascinating career filled with many interesting challenges and
bright people. My research focused on the microscopic understanding
of materials, particularly their surface and interfaces. My studies
have used X-rays from synchrotron to probe the structure and phases
at surfaces and interfaces. Recently, I have been interested in
the phenomena of self assembly. My love for this field began in
the academic world starting with a BS in physics at Princeton
University and then a Ph.D. in applied physics at Harvard. I spent
the next 20 years in the corporate world with positions including
researcher at Bell Laboratories and the Senior Director of the
research laboratory at Exxon Research and Engineering Company.
In 1989, I returned to the academic world as the Director of Princeton's
Materials Institute and a member of the Physics Department. In
1996, I joined Columbia as Director of the Lamont-Doherty Earth
Observatory and Vice Provost for the Earth Institute, positions
held through June 1999.
