Modern and Future Climate

The Climate Science Group strives to solve problems in climate on timescales from seasonal to Quaternary and beyond. We use models representing the ocean, the atmosphere, the cryosphere and the land surface, ranging from simple to complex. In addition to analyses of data from recent decades, we develop techniques to extract as much as possible from the inaccurate and sparse data of the past.
Much of our work, often in collaboration with the International Research Institute located at Lamont, has been on understanding and predicting seasonal to interannual climate variations, especially El Niño and the North Atlantic Oscillation, and on the impacts of such variations on agriculture and health. Our recent focus is on accounting for the startlingly abrupt changes apparent in the paleoclimate record. Could such changes occur in the near future? Our investigations of the past and the future rely heavily on our knowledge of modern climate dynamics.

My research interests cover a wide range of topics from the cloud physics to climate dynamics, with the ultimate goal of enhancing our ability to predict future states of the climate system. Towards this goal, I have been focused on a better understanding of the climate phenomena, and an adequate representation of them in our primary tool for prediction: general circulation models (GCMs). My research has involved synergistic combinations of numerical modeling and statistical analysis. Specifically, I have focused on: i) physics of cumulus convection, and ii) global-scale climate variability in the tropics. These two themes, described in detail below, are tightly coupled.  My work on climate variability has focused on, but not limited to, the Madden-Julian oscillation (MJO) and the El-Niño southern oscillation (ENSO) phenomenon. These are the primary sources of predictability on the intraseasonal and interannual time scale, respectively.

Stratosphere-Troposphere coupling, Wave-mean flow interaction, Mid-latitude climate variability

My research uses observations, idealized and state-of-the-art global climate models to understand the dynamics of the large-scale mid-latitude circulation and its role in climate. 

In particular, I study how the stratosphere couples with the troposphere via planetary scale waves. The coupling directly impacts the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) and the variability of the North-Atlantic jet stream.

I also work on understanding the dynamics of anomalous mid-latitude weather patterns called blocking, persistent high-pressure systems linked to extreme weather such as droughts and cold-snaps, and their representation in global climate models.
