Planet Earth
Earth & Environmental Science V1053y
Goals of the course are to teach you:
- to understand how
scientists think:
examples: identifying unanswered questions, formulating
hypotheses, planning experiments, assembling chains of reasoning, drawing
inferences from observations.
- to look at the natural earth with informed eyes (maybe even saving
your life one of these days):
examples: Why are there mountains around the edges of North America, and a flat part in the middle? Why does the earth
have oceans and continents? What causes volcanoes? Tsunamis? Earthquakes?
- to understand the impact of the earth on human affairs:
examples: Why is there so much oil in Saudi Arabia? What is global warming or climate change all
about? Why are there destructive
earthquakes in California, Pakistan, Japan, Turkey?
